A mon propos

J'ai une double formation de psychosociologue spécialisé dans la formation d'adultes (Psychologue FSP; Diplômé en Psychologie et Ressources Humaines, Université de Genève, 2001), et de philosophe de l'éducation (Docteur en Sciences de l'éducation, Université de Paris 8, 2007). Je vis à Genève où je dirige depuis 2013 l'Institut Sunkhronos au sein duquel je conduis mes recherches et exerce ma pratique de formation, d'accompagnement et d'intervention. En Suisse, j'enseigne également à l’Université de Fribourg où j’ai la responsabilité du Certificat Récits de vie et accompagnement biographique (CAS). Aux Etats-Unis, où j'ai vécu pendant huit ans, je suis Professeur Associé Adjoint au Teachers College, Columbia University, dans le département Organization and Leadership, où j'enseigne régulièrement.

Ma pratique privilégie des démarches d’accompagnement biographique, favorisant des réflexions situées au croisement entre sciences humaines, philosophie, histoires de vie et expériences quotidiennes. Je m’intéresse en particulier aux manières dont on interprète les processus de transformation, ainsi que les temporalités et les rythmes qui sont constitutifs de nos vies. Mes enseignements, mes démarches d'accompagnement et mes intérêts de recherche font ainsi appel aux histoires de vie comme moyen de promouvoir une réflexivité critique, une intelligence de la complexité, une intelligence rythmique, l'émergence d'apprentissages transformateurs, le développement d'une capacité de leadership, ou la mise en oeuvre de stratégies de recherche transdisciplinaires.

J'ai reçu le Outstanding Teacher Award (2005-2006) au Teachers College, Columbia University, ainsi que le Jack Mezirow Living Theory of Transformative Learning Award en 2016, pour “une contribution remarquable à la compréhension des enjeux théoriques, de recherche et de pratique autour de l'apprentissage transformateur”.

Je suis membre du Founding Committee of the International Transformative Learning Association, du comité scientifique de l'Italian Transformative Learning Network et membre honoraire de la Hellenic Association on Transformative Learning. J’ai été membre élu du Comité directeur de la Société Européenne pour la Recherche en Education des Adultes et co-responsable du Réseau "Interrogating Transformative Processes in Learning" au sein de cette même association.

J’ai également été éditeur associé de la revue Complicity: An International Journal of Complexity and Education. Je suis actuellement membre du comité éditorial des revues internationales Adult Education Quarterly et Journal of Transformative Education, des revues internationales francophones de formation des adultes Pratiques de Formation / Analyses et Chemins de Formation de la revue internationale de recherche biographique Le Sujet dans la Cité, de la revue internationale sur la professionnalisation Phronesis, de la revue polonaise en sciences de l'éducation Teraźniejszość - Człowiek - Edukacja, et des revues internationales Transdisciplinary Journal of Engineering & Science et World Futures: The Journal of New Paradigm Research.

J'ai initié le réseau international implexus - éducation, critique and complexité (2010-2016) et je suis actuellement affilié aux associations et réseaux suivants: 

Un autre versant de ma vie se concentre sur l'expression artistique. Petit-fils d'une artiste peintre, Elisabeth Adler Kaufmann, je pratique la photographie depuis 30 ans et j'ai exploré au cours de ces dernières années le recours à la vidéo. J'ai eu l'opportunité d'exposer certaines de mes photographies et vidéos lors d'une exposition collective aux Etats-Unis (Imogen Holloway Gallery, Saugerties, New York) en 2013. Ma femme enseigne la danse et nous travaillons ensemble à l'heure actuelle sur différents projets éducatifs et artistiques recoupant nos intérêts respectifs pour l'espace et le temps.

About me

I am a psychosociologist specializing in adult training (Psychologue FSP; Masters in Psychology & Human Resources, University of Geneva, 2001), as well as a philosopher of education (Doctorate in Education, University of Paris 8, 2007). I am living in Geneva where I am the Executive Director of the Sunkhronos Institute since 2013. I conduct my research, consulting, training and coaching practices within this Institute. In Switzerland, I also work as a Lecturer at the University of Fribourg where I am the Program Director of the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Life narrative and biographical coaching. In the United States, where I lived for eight years, I am an Adjunct Associate Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, in the department of Organization and Leadership, where I am teaching on a regular basis.

In my practice, I privilege the use of biographical coaching to stimulate reflections located at the crossroads between human sciences, philosophy, life histories and daily experiences. I am particularly interested in the ways people interpret transformative processes, as well as the temporalities and rhythms that are constitutive of their lives. My teaching, coaching and research interests include among others: the use of life history to promote critical self-reflection, complex ways of thinking, rhythmic intelligence, transformative learning, leadership development, or the development of transdisciplinary strategies of research.

I received the Outstanding Teacher Award (2005-2006) at Teachers College, Columbia University, and I am the recipient of the 2016 Jack Mezirow Living Theory of Transformative Learning Award, for “an outstanding contribution to the understanding of transformative learning theory, research and practice”.

I am a member of the Founding Committee of the International Transformative Learning Association, of the scientific committee of the Italian Transformative Learning Network, and an honorary member of the Hellenic Association on Transformative Learning. I have also been an elected member of the Steering Committee of the European Society for Research on the Education of Adults, and a co-convenor of the "Interrogating Transformative Processes in Learning" Network within this association.

I have also been Associate Editor of Complicity: An International Journal of Complexity and Education. I am currently a Consulting editor for the Journal of Transformative Education, an Editorial board member of the international French-speaking journals of adult education Pratiques de Formation / Analyses and Chemins de Formation, the international journal of biographical research Le Sujet dans la Cité, the international journal on professionalization Phronesis, the Polish journal in educational sciences Teraźniejszość - Człowiek - Edukacja, and the international journals World Futures: The Journal of New Paradigm Research and Transdisciplinary Journal of Engineering & Science.

Another side of my life is dedicated to artistic expression. Grandson of a lifelong painter, Elisabeth Adler Kaufmann, I have been practicing photography for 30 years and I have recently started using video. I had the opportunity to present some of my photographies and videos in a collective exhibition in the United States (Imogen Holloway Gallery, Saugerties, New York) in 2013. My wife is a dance educator and we are currently collaborating on various educational and artistic projects merging our respective interests for space and time.
